Former NFL player, award-winning restaurateur shot during attempted robbery in Hyattsville

A former NFL player who has since become an award-winning chef and restaurateur was shot during an attempted robbery Tuesday night in Hyattsville, Maryland.

Hyattsville police reported that two people — a man and a woman — were shot while returning from dinner, but did not release their names or the conditions.

Prince George’s County Council member Wanika Fisher told 7News that Tobias Dorzon was one of the victims, is recovering from his injuries, and that she was distraught after learning that the constituents and her friend had been shot.

“I’m so heartbroken and worried and praying for Tobias’ recovery,” Fisher said. “I was just on my hands and knees, praying that Tobias was okay. Gun violence and violence in our communities is simply unacceptable and disgusting.”

After playing in the NFL, Dorzon became a chef.

He returned home to Prince George’s County, where he opened Huncho House, which garnered rave reviews.

However, Fisher said his success is only the tip of the iceberg as to why he has become an important leader in the community.

“His restaurants employ students from Northwestern High School. He makes sure his kitchen has black and brown chefs and women,” Fisher said. “He lives in my district, he owns a business in my district, he’s a friend, he supports my community. I’m just sad, but I’m angry.”

Just six months ago, Fisher and her fellow council members honored Dorzon.

Then, he had just been named Chef of the Year by the Restaurant Association of Maryland, becoming the first in Prince George’s County to earn the distinction.

At the council meeting, he spoke about how important it was for him to return home.

“Leave Houston and come home so you can give the people of our county an opportunity to get back to work,” Dorzon said during the ceremony in May. “I’m here to stay. I’m here to continue to make the county better.”

Hyattsville police said they are looking for five victims as well as a white SUV with a sunroof.

“I am doing everything I can to support our Hyattsville Police Department in bringing these perpetrators to justice and to support Tobias and his family at this time,” Fisher said.

7News On Your Side asked Fisher if an incident like this, involving someone with such a high profile, would push the county to address gun violence again.

“The reality for Prince George’s County is that the gun laws are in Annapolis. At the county level it’s the police department. We don’t have the authority to ban certain things like D.C. does. That’s Annapolis. I think it’s really imperative that we continue advocate for it, as the council did,” Fisher said. “You have to get illegal guns off the street. We are a border district. Illegal guns are coming into my community in DC, from Virginia, from other places. Illegal guns, undetected guns, are a huge national problem. It is not a local one. The body that can sort this out, I think it’s about investment, as you’ve seen, more cameras, whatever we can do locally, that’s why we’ve fought so hard on police bonuses this budget cycle, we’ve got to do everything we can, but it takes multiple levels of government to get these guns off the street.”
