Police confirm identities of victims in fatal plane crash near Mesa Airport

MESA, AZ (AZFamily) — Authorities have identified four of the five people who died after a plane crashed right outside a Mesa airport and hit a car late Tuesday afternoon.

Five people were on board the plane, four of whom died on the spot. They were identified as:

  • Spencer Lindahl, 43
  • Rustin Randall, 48
  • Drew Kimball, 44
  • Graham Kimball, 12

The accident happened around 16:45 Greenfield and McKellips roadsjust southwest of Falcon Field Airport. According to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), preliminary information indicates that a Honda HA-420 plane attempted to abort takeoff before crashing through an airport perimeter fence and colliding with a vehicle on Greenfield Road.

Sources confirmed to the Arizona family that Randall was the pilot and the group reportedly flew to Provo, Utah. Mesa police say one person on the plane survived and remains hospitalized with burns.

The driver of the vehicle also died in the fiery crash but has not been identified as next of kin notifications are ongoing.

Arizona family obtained security video from Flight Routes Helicopters, Inc.business at the airport, showing the plane crashing through a fence and into a car on Greenfield Road. Immediately after, fire and black smoke can be seen rising into the sky.

Keith Small works in the company’s hangar and helps repair helicopters after wrecks. He was at work on Tuesday afternoon when the accident occurred.

“I heard metal crashing and didn’t think much of it at first. And then I thought, ‘Wait a minute,'” he recalled. “So I got up and turned around and I could see the dirt at the end of the runway over there. And as soon as I got around the corner, then boom! The plane exploded. And it exploded a couple of times, three times.”

As of Wednesday evening, Greenfield Road remains closed from McKellips to McDowell. The wreckage is still on the roadway and only traffic to the Air Force Museum is allowed through.

A Mesa police officer on the scene said the area is expected to be closed for several more days. Drivers in the area are asked to use caution as the investigation continues.

NTSB investigators are also on the scene, and more arrived Wednesday. Once the on-site investigation is complete, the plane will be taken to a secure facility for further evaluation.

A preliminary report will be released within 30 days, while a final report is not expected for another 12-24 months.
