Cherry Creek bus with 13 students on board involved in hit-and-run crash; 1 in custody

DENVER (KDVR) — The Colorado State Patrol is investigating a crash after a driver in a black SUV hit a Cherry Creek Schools bus Wednesday afternoon, then left the scene.

The driver of the black SUV was later arrested, and no one on the bus reported injuries, according to CSP.

Cherry Creek Schools told FOX31’s Kasia Kerridge it was an elementary bus with 13 students on board. All were checked by emergency personnel out of an abundance of caution, but no injuries were reported.

The accident was reported to law enforcement around 2:31 p.m., CSP informed, and 13 students were on board the bus. The crash happened at Boston Court and Louisiana Avenue.

“We had district security personnel who were on site and assisted parents who arrived to pick up their children,” Chief Communications Officer Abbe Smith said in an email. “The remaining students were transported back to the school to be picked up by their parents. A message was sent to parents via phone, text and email informing them of the situation.”

Ashlynn, 11, was on the bus, which had departed from a nearby primary school.

“I have never been in a bus accident or any type of accident. It was really scary for me… They were all screaming, freaking out like I didn’t know what happened,” Ashlynn told Kerridge.

“It’s kind of scary because it’s already bad conditions out here to drive at first, and then you throw a bus into the mix,” said Ashlynn’s mother, Crystal Hayes, as she picked up her daughter from the scene. “I’m glad my daughter and all the kids and the bus driver are safe.”

Another crash was reported at 2:10 p.m. and may be related to the school bus crash, according to the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office and the Aurora Police Department.

The Aurora Police Department said a Chevy Envoy was eastbound on Mississippi Avenue approaching the intersection with Dayton Street. The agency said the vehicle struck a Nissan Xterra and then fled the crash in the Envoy. A driver in a pickup truck saw the attempt to flee, chased Envoy and hit him to immobilize him, Aurora police said.

Officers arrested the driver of the Envoy, a 23-year-old man, and transported him to a local hospital.

Aurora police said charges are pending against the driver of the Envoy, and the occupant of the Xterra was also taken to a local hospital. Officers were not told the extent of the person’s injuries.

“We believe the at-fault driver was also involved in an accident with a school bus in Arapahoe County prior to our incident,” the Aurora Police Department told FOX31. The Colorado State Patrol is leading this investigation.
