PHOENIX – Phoenix police say a man is dead after an officer-involved shooting Monday night.

According to a police department spokesman, officers were first called to investigate reports of a home invasion in a neighborhood near 19th and Southern avenues around 10 p.m. The caller reported that a person, who was armed with handguns, was trying to break into the house. .

Responding officers located a pickup truck matching the description of the suspect vehicle and attempted to pull it over, however, the driver did not stop.

During a brief police pursuit of the vehicle, the driver crashed into a retaining wall in the area and the driver exited the car with two guns.

While trying to run from the officers, police say the man held one of the firearms, leading to the officer-involved shooting.

The man, identified as 41-year-old Carlos Fregoso, was struck by gunfire and pronounced dead at the scene.

Two handguns were recovered near Fregoso and an additional rifle was found inside the truck.

The investigation is ongoing.

It was the first of two police-involved shootings in Phoenix in about 12 hours. Early Tuesday morning, Phoenix officers were involved a shooting near 7th Street and Indian School Road.
