A Colorado father is finally back home on the mend after becoming ill on a vacation cruise and spending weeks in a hospital in Europe.

Guy Matlock, 64, was diagnosed with influenza A, pneumonia and sepsis during a trip to Europe in September.

He was hospitalized in Copenhagen, Denmark. His daughter Moriah said he was breathing on a ventilator.

The family spent weeks trying to raise funds to fly him back home to the US requesting donations on a GoFundMe page.

On Monday, the family posted that Matlock had arrived home. They continue to post updates on his recovery.

“Our parents have arrived safely!” the post reads. “Thank you again for all the support and help we have received in bringing our parents home. Words could never express the gratitude and appreciation we have for all the donations, sharing, messages, phone calls, etc.”

“We feel incredibly blessed to have so much support and outreach from people.”

A holiday turned into a nightmare

Moriah said her parents went on a European cruise to celebrate their 37th birthday with another couple in September. About a week into the trip, her father started to get sick, but initially thought it was a common cold.

Her father’s condition rapidly worsened and he was taken to the ship’s infirmary. He was then taken to a hospital after the ship declared an emergency and was pulled into the nearest port.

He later went into cardiac arrest.

Having never traveled out of the country before, Moriah and other relatives obtained emergency passports to visit their father while he was hospitalized in Denmark. Her physical interaction and communication with him was limited due to his diagnosis.

“It was really heartbreaking to have to talk to my dad like that… I’m glad I was able to be there for him,” she previously said in an interview with FOX television. “I’ve never seen my father in such a state that he couldn’t even breathe on his own.”

The challenge of bringing dad home

Moriah praised the hospital staff in Denmark, but the staff agreed that her father would recover much faster and better if he returned to the US, where he would be at home, surrounded by family, and would not have difficulty understanding a foreign languages.

However, insurance would only pay for part of his trip back home, leaving the family to pay $150,000 upfront to cover the costs of medical transport from Europe to Colorado.

“He needs a medical evacuation to get back, and that will require a doctor on the plane to help him,” Moriah said, adding that if her father makes progress in Europe, the cost of transportation could be slightly less.

The family has set up a GoFundMe page to help cover medical transportation. They also asked people to offer any resources or medical advice that could help the family work through foreign bureaucracies.

Moriah said her father has a big and giving heart, and she hopes he will receive the same feeling in return.

“He has a great smile and loves to make other people smile,” she said.
