Browns GM acknowledges fan frustration amid Baker Mayfield’s success in Tampa Bay

After the Cleveland Browns lost their starting quarterback Deshaun Watson to a season-ending Achilles tear In Week 7, the team turned to backup Jameis Winston. For one glorious week, Cleveland’s passing game was competent. Winston threw for 334 yards and three touchdowns and Browns beat Watson’s best effort with a game-high 29 points in their win over the Baltimore Ravens.

The following week, Browns fans witnessed Winston’s reverse as he threw three interceptions in a loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. Still, with 235 yards passing against LA, Winston was an improvement over Watson, who has failed to reach the 200-yard mark in any of his seven starts this season.

Browns general manager Andrew Berry was asked what would he say for fans watching backup quarterbacks throw for 300 yards and seeing Baker Mayfield’s success in Tampa Bay when Deshaun Watson fought so hard before he got hurt.

“When you’re 2-7 going into halftime, you understand the fans’ frustration. And we haven’t played consistently in attack and it’s shared ownership. It is indeed common property. We’re capable of playing better, we should be playing better,” Berry said, in a transcript of the press conference provided by the Browns Media Center.

“And like I said, we’re going to make the necessary adjustments to improve our performance over the next eight games and then obviously we’re going to make the adjustments to make sure we don’t feel like that in the first nine games of the year before. Berry added.

Are you feeling better, Browns fans?

Winston’s strong outing in Week 8 likely ended Watson’s tenure as Cleveland’s starting QB. Head coach Kevin Stefanski strongly supported Winston as the team’s starter and will likely keep the job for the rest of the season. So the Browns are in for the full Jameis experience — terrifying lows, dizzying highs… the creamy middles.

Meanwhile, in the NFC South, Baker Mayfield is coming off the best season of his career. The Buccaneers fell to 4-5 after their Week 9 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. But the team was hit hard by injuries. Tampa Bay lost Chris Godwin for the season because of a dislocated ankle and a veteran receiver Mike Evans went down with a hamstring injury this will cost him more games.

Still, Mayfield was spectacular. After nine games, he leads the league in touchdown passes (23), while he is second in completions (225) and passing yards (2,389). He has completed a career-best 71.4 percent of his passes and has a passer rating of 105.6.

The Browns selected Mayfield with the first overall pick in the 2018 draft. However, the team decided exchange for Watson before the 2022 season, waiving Mayfield. Baker was traded to the Carolina Panthers and Browns signed Watson to one of the worst contracts ever in NFL history.

When asked directly whether the decision to acquire Watson it was his ideaBerry understandably dodged the question, telling reporters “we’re all on board.” It’s hard to blame him. Nobody wants to be singled out for making one of the worst football decisions ever.
