The Marquette Police Department offers to check vacant homes

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) – If you’re leaving home for a while this winter, the Marquette Police Department is here to check your vacant house.

In addition to making sure you have good locks on your doors and windows, Marquette Police Department Capt. James Finkbeiner says you can have an officer watch the property.

He says they will set up a schedule with people and visit their homes several times a week. An officer will make sure the doors are locked and nothing is broken into or taken. They will also contact homeowners if anything is wrong.

“Well, there are a number of residents that will be gone for months, you know, most of the winter, but there are people that will be gone for a few weeks or something,” Finkbeiner said. “We are more than happy to come and check those residences.”

He says the service has been around for a long time and is offered year-round for Marquette residents. He says it’s meant to give people peace of mind.

Those interested can complete a vacant housing form on the city’s website or call the department at 906-228-0400 to request check-ins.
