A ‘disgruntled ex-employee’ killed two men at Chicago’s Navy Pier tourist attraction

A man who was recently fired from his job at Navy Pier, one of Chicago’s top tourist attractions, returned to his former workplace and killed two people before fleeing Tuesday, police said.

Chicago Police Chief Jon Hein said at a news conference that the shooting happened just before 1:20 p.m. in an administrative office on a loading dock on the north side of Navy Pier.

The two workers, both men, who were shot were taken to Northwestern Hospital, where they were later pronounced dead, police said.

“This was an isolated incident with a disgruntled former employee,” Hein said.

The shooting did not take place in a public area of the tourist area, officials said, but Navy Pier was briefly closed while the investigation was underway.

Police are still actively searching for the suspect but have not publicly identified him, citing a department policy not to name people unless they are charged.

The fatal shooting comes a day after Chicago police officer Enrique Martinez was shot and killed while on duty. The incidents are unrelated.
