Elderly Rights Awareness Walk held in Visakhapatnam

Visakhapatnam: An awareness walk highlighting the importance of caring for and connecting older people took place along Beach Road on Wednesday morning, drawing attention to the increasing challenges senior citizens face in modern society. The event, jointly organized by Heritage Foundation RRTC, Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment and AU National Service Scheme.

Dr. KR Gangadharan, Chairman, Heritage Foundation India, emphasized the critical need to prioritize the care of the elderly in today’s society. “Elders stand as bridges between our past and our present,” he said. Their experience and knowledge are invaluable resources that we need to tap into.

AU National Service Scheme Coordinator Acharya S. Harnath highlighted the declining trend of joint families in India as a significant concern. In the past, joint families provided security, respect and status to our elders. Today’s mechanical lifestyle has created a disconnect. He highlighted the growing demographic challenge, noting that while the elderly population is growing worldwide due to improved living standards, the youth population is declining.

The event specifically focused on the involvement of younger generations in caring for the elderly. “It is crucial that we develop closer relationships between young and old, ensuring that our seniors can age with dignity and self-respect is not just a social responsibility but a moral imperative,” he added.
