A four-year-old boy from Sedgefield has died after being mauled by a dog.

The victim, Simikuso Ntswayibana, was attacked in Sedgefield informal settlement while playing with friends on Tuesday afternoon.

A spokesperson for the family, Johnson Dyan, told Algoa FM News that the children were playing outside when a pack of dogs in the area started chasing them.

Dyan says a dog managed to get to Simikuso and bit him severely, after which the little boy ran into a bushy area near Groenvallai in an attempt to escape the dog.

He says they contacted the police and found her lifeless body.

Police in Knysna have opened an investigation.

It is not yet known if the dogs belong to anyone, but it is suspected that they are part of a wild pack.
