5 BL dramas with iconic allies we love

It makes sense that the main couples tend to get all the limelight, but in the world of BL, there are times when the allies really shine too – those special characters who support and support love in all its shapes and sizes. They are those characters you wish were real and your best friend

This is about cheering on the most beloved and iconic allies in the BL world. These five characters are the ones you just can’t help but love.

Warning: mild spoilers ahead!

1. “Light on Me”: Shi Woon

The MVP award of “Light On Me” undoubtedly goes to Namgoong Shi Woon (Go Woo Jin), drama’s most loved and worst ally. Shiwoon is a member of the student council, which the antisocial and downright honest Woo Tae Kyung (Lee Sae On) tries to join in order to come out of his shell and make friends. His attempts, however, are not immediately fruitful.

Tae Kyung soon tangles with two contrasting men: student council vice president Noh Shin Woo (Kang Yoo Seok) and President Shin Da On (Choe Chan Yi). Cue the self-proclaimed relationship expert Shi Woon, who is able to understand the romantic atmosphere in the student council before anyone else.

The amazing thing about the ray of sunshine that is Shi Woon is that he has no problem accepting that his friends might have feelings for each other. He supports them from the start, no questions asked!

Shi Woon is never slow to offer advice to his friends as they navigate their complicated and growing feelings. Although he sometimes seems to speak in riddles (at least according to the ignorant Tae Kyung), he always says what his friends need to hear. Shi Woon gives off golden retriever energy 24/7 and is seriously the king of room reading.

2. “The New Employee”: Ji Yeon

In “The New Employee,” supporting character Seo Ji Yeon (Baek Ji Hye) takes the cake as the supportive and hilarious longtime friend of gay executive and newly hired intern Wu Seung Hyeon (Luna Ji Yong). All Ji Yeon wants for her boyfriend is for him to find a good guy who will treat him right, and that might just happen when things start to happen between Seung Hyeon and his boss.

What starts as a little office crush turns into something more after a drunken kiss, and Ji Yeon is there to help Seung Hyeon navigate the treacherous waters of office romance. As an outspoken woman who is part of the LGBTQ+ community herself, she is an open-minded character who is truly admirable.

One of the most iconic scenes in the drama happens when Seung Hyeon drinks a little too much and accidentally lets slip that Seung Hyeon likes men. Of course, she does this in front of his boss, which actually helps her long-term friend.

3. “My love mix!”: Hashimoto Mio

It’s hard to find dislikes or faults in the honest and kind Hashimoto Mio (Riko Fukumoto) in “My Love Mix-Up!” It’s what might seem like an ordinary schoolgirl until she steps up to the plate to encourage and protect her goofy officemate, Aoki Sota (Michieda Shunsuke). Hilarious chaos and an identity crisis for Sota ensues when he borrows an eraser from Mio, leading to confusion between who likes who in their class. This confusion creates a friendship between Mio and Sota.

When Sota reveals to Mio that his boyfriend is another classmate, she immediately assures him that it’s normal and that there’s nothing wrong with him. It didn’t even take him a minute to process. The scene could easily make anyone cry.

In the end, Mio plays a big role in helping Sota accept that his feelings are completely okay, and she’s not afraid to punch anyone who tries to tell her otherwise. Without her, he might not have found the courage to follow his heart, let alone accept himself. Well done, Mio!

4. “Kabe-Koji-Nekoyashiki-kun Wants to be recognized”: Koharu Yamada

Yamada Koharu (Yahagi Honoka), a proud fujoshi (an extreme BL fangirl), is the funny BL lover in “Kabe-Koji-Nekoyashiki-kun Desires to be Recognized”. She is close friends and classmates with the contrastingly gloomy Nekoyashiki Mamoru (Matsuoka Koudai). Mamoru is an erotic BL manga artist who needs to feel recognized for his work in order to survive.

Hoping for nothing in return—except for him to continue publishing her BL novels—Koharu just wants her friend to find happiness and success. In one of the drama’s most touching and heartbreaking scenes, she defends Mamoru against a classmate who calls him out for being gay. It’s so satisfying to see the palm he lands. It’s perfect.

Mamoru already struggles with depression and a severe inferiority complex, so when his childhood friend and old girlfriend, now a J-pop idol, comes back into his life, Mamoru’s complicated feelings go into overdrive. Luckily, Koharu is there to give her advice and a shoulder to cry on when she’s going through tough times.

Whether it’s visiting his home with food, giving him advice on his drawings, or attending his manga events, she’s always there for him. She is an icon through and through.

5. “The president of my school“: Thiu

Finally, in My School President, Mark Pakin Kunaanuwit plays the ever-reliable Thiu, Tinn’s best friend (Twins Norawit Titicharoenrak). Thiu is well aware of Tinn’s longtime crush on another classmate Gun (The fourth Nattawat Jirochtikul). In fact, he was Tinn’s man.

Gun still hasn’t noticed Tinn, so Tinn decides to finally make his dream of dating Gun come true by becoming the school president. Sure enough, Thiu is there to help Tinn plan—ahem, plan— ways to win Gun’s heart. Thiu is also a BL watcher and even suggests Tinn to use the BL series to learn how to win Gun’s heart. That’s pretty good advice in my book.

Thiu is not only a sincere ally, but also a truly amazing friend. A friend who doesn’t question who you like but supports you instead? Those are the goals of friends right there.
