Amplifying Change: Geneva Learning Foundation and Grand Challenges Canada Improve Global Health Community Perspectives on Climate Impacts

Geneva, Switzerland – November 6, 2024 – The Geneva Learning Foundation (TGLF) and Grand Challenges Canada (GCC) are proud to announce a new partnership that will focus on turning insights from the local health community in low- and middle-income countries into actionable insights on pressing health challenges. of climate change.

This collaboration aims to learn from the health community operating in areas severely affected by climate change around the globe. The aim is to use a global survey to understand the specific health risks related to climate change and to identify barriers to addressing these challenges, particularly in vulnerable communities. Through this partnership, the GCC will ensure that its future innovation demands are based on the needs of those directly addressing climate impacts on health.

Karlee Silver, CEO of Grand Challenges Canada, emphasized the importance of this partnership, stating:
“At Grand Challenges Canada, we are committed to learning from those on the front lines of health crises. With the support of global technology company Arm and the Government of Canada, we are collaborating with the Geneva Learning Foundation to ensure that the knowledge and lived experiences of the local health community guide our search for innovations that are adapted to the unique challenges of climate change. health risks.”

The GCC will join the TGLF Teach to Reach initiative— a global peer-to-peer learning network connecting more than 60,000 health professionals in more than 80 countries — and this partnership will provide a platform for community health workers to share their experiences with the global health community. The majority (80%) of these health workers are locally based, ensuring that their knowledge reflects the realities faced by those most affected by climate-related health risks, such as rising temperatures, increases in vectors and extreme weather. the events.

In the lead-up to Teach to Reach 11, which will take place on 5-6 December 2024, participating health workers will provide essential information that will help identify health risks exacerbated by climate change and reveal the systemic barriers they face in adaptation to these risks. . These perspectives will shape the agenda and discussions of the event, ensuring that local perspectives are central to the discussion. Broader engagement with the health community will intensify in early 2025 with the launch of a global survey, which will provide a crucial evidence base that can guide future policy discussions and innovation efforts.

The collaboration between GCC and TGLF aims to ensure that health workers’ knowledge of the health impacts of climate change informs our efforts to support global innovation. Grand Challenges Canada will leverage learning to shape future funding applications, accelerating the development of future innovations that are relevant, responsive and based on local knowledge and expertise.

Reda Sadki, executive director of the Geneva Learning Foundation pointed out:

“By harnessing the collective wisdom of community health professionals, Teach to Reach is accelerating progress on climate-sensitive health risks. Through our partnership with Grand Challenges Canada, we catalyze community resilience through peer-to-peer learning. Together, we empower local health workers as leaders of change; facilitating the rapid exchange of knowledge, enabling them to rapidly adapt and respond to emerging challenges, and turning shared knowledge into powerful action for better global health.”
