The police and firemen attacked with fireworks

Three teenagers have been arrested after fireworks were thrown at police and firefighters during Manchester’s Bonfire Night.

A large group of people were reported to have set off fireworks and rockets in Vine Street, Gorton, at 16:15 GMT on Tuesday.

Sup. Richard McNamara said three men aged between 16 and 18 were arrested on suspicion of causing violent disorder and were in custody for questioning, with further arrests to follow.

“It is shocking that we are seeing fireworks being used as a weapon for the emergency services as they try to keep our communities safe,” he said.

“Fortunately, we have had no injuries reported and despite fireworks being directed at our officers, I am also pleased to say that no officers were injured.”

Sup. McNamara said officers were pursuing several lines of inquiry “which will ensure that all those responsible are brought to justice”.

He added that the force worked alongside others in the area throughout the evening, carrying out joint patrols with youth services and Greater Manchester Fire Service.
