Teen kills 13-year-old boy in ‘accidental shooting’ in Minneapolis

A 13-year-old boy was fatally shot by a 14-year-old boy early Tuesday in what Minneapolis police are calling an “accidental shooting.”

Officers from the 4th Precinct responded to the shooting at 1:30 a.m. at a home in the 2400 block of Ferrant Place. They found the 13-year-old boy in a house with a single gunshot wound. Despite the rescue efforts of the police, the boy died on the spot.

Initial reports from police indicate that a 14-year-old boy was wielding a gun when the 13-year-old was shot. Two women and other children were in the home at the time of the shooting, but no one else was injured.

MPD says they are familiar with the boys involved and the 14-year-old boy was at the scene when officers arrived.

The 14-year-old boy was booked into the Hennepin County Juvenile Detention Center and MPD is working to determine what led up to the shooting.

“The death of a child is always incredibly upsetting and tragic,” Chief O’Hara said. “Our investigators will be working diligently to answer the many questions we have. In addition to supporting the families affected by this tragedy, everyone must make every effort to ensure that every gun is safely stored.”
