Long lines, ‘unfounded’ bomb threats to AZ polling sites

PHOENIX — Election Day in Arizona is finally here! The polls officially opened at 6am and will close at 7pm, with ballot counting expected to begin after 8pm.

ABC15 is here to bring you the latest Election Day news tonight and in the days ahead as votes are counted in Arizona and across the country.

Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes said there is unsubstantiated reports of bomb threats at four specific locations in Navajo County.

“These are unfounded bomb threats,” he said at an afternoon news conference. “We have no reason to believe that voters or polling stations are at risk.”

Fontes said he believed the threats came from a foreign enemy “namely Russia,” but declined to elaborate, saying he had just been briefed on the information.

“We have no reason to believe anyone is in danger,” he said.

The Navajo Nation President’s Office tells ABC15 the Navajo Nation is working in conjunction with ASU National Vote to try to file an extension request until 3 p.m.

We’re seeing more polling places with long lines this afternoon as turnout in Arizona appears to be high.

We are receiving multiple reports of long lines at polling places in Maricopa County. The video below is from ASU.

Maricopa County election officials are seeing an increase in voters during the lunch hour, with some of the busiest places being college campuses: Arizona State University Sun Devil Fitness Center, Mesa Community College and Estrella Mountain Community College.

So far, more than 127,000 voters have registered.

The county projects up to 375,000 voters on Election Day.

Longer queues are expected from 16:00 to 19:00

Some polling centers in the Vale are seeing very long queues, but people are being reminded that if they are in line they will be able to vote.

Maricopa County’s latest election day voter count:

12 o’clock in the evening

Election officials in Maricopa County reported an average wait time of 2 minutes at polling places this morning. A “small handful of centers” are reporting lines up to 30 minutes long.

Mid-afternoon is expected to have the shortest lines.

The highest demand is expected to be between 16:00 and 19:00. You can check wait times at locations.maricopa.vote.

Maricopa County has so far provided the first update on the number of voters who will cast their ballots today.

Maricopa County is reporting heavy traffic at several polling places in the Valley this morning, including:

  • Aire Libre School
  • Anthem Civic Center
  • Chandler-Gilbert Community College
  • Desert Hills Community Church
  • Indian Bend Wash Visitor Center
  • Memorial Presbyterian Church
  • Paradise Valley Community College
  • City Hall surprise
  • Tolleson Civic Center

Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes has announced a press conference at 9 a.m. to talk about how the election process is going so far.

A viewer reported to ABC15 that there were delays this morning at the Aire Libre Elementary School polling place in north Phoenix.

The Maricopa County Recorder’s Office told ABC15 that an election worker with the ballot initially got stuck in the building and the problem is expected to be resolved soon.

Some viewers in Mohave County initially reported problems as the polls opened in Mohave County.

ABC15 reached out to the Mohave County Department of Elections, who said all issues have been resolved and voting is proceeding normally.

Polls are officially open in Arizona.
