How can I track official election results in key states today?

As if reporting on the 2024 election could be more widespread, today’s news outlets will have wall-to-wall coverage of every event, but you can filter out that noise by going straight to the source and getting results from the official sites from key states.

Today’s Election Day is marked this year by the race for President between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump. Like the last election cycle, pundits predict a close race that could come down to results in a few key battleground states. Turnout is also expected to be high this year, with over 84 million people early voting in the US so far and states like Georgia is already reporting record numbers. For comparison, over 101 million people voted early in the 2020 general election.

Read on to find out where you’ll be able to find official updates on Election Day, and for more, learn how I can see what’s on the ballot this year and see if your state allows you to register to vote today.

What are the main battleground states in 2024?

Because of the mechanics of the Electoral College system, in recent decades it has often been the case that presidential elections are ultimately decided by a handful of “battleground states,” also known as “swing states.” These are states with a more evenly split population between Democratic and Republican voters than most, making it more likely that they could “swing” either way during a presidential election and decide the outcome.

This year, seven states are considered to be the main battlegrounds: Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. These are the states whose results are likely to attract the most attention on Election Day.

Where can I get official vote results for key battleground states?

For each of these states, you’ll be able to get election day results online from an official state government website, usually the Secretary of State’s website, but also potentially the state Board of Elections website. Below is where to check the results for each battleground state:

How about an easier way to track results today?

If you’d rather not consider election results this way, and perhaps want something simpler while cutting out all the noise in your news feed, you of course have options. One in particular worth noting is CNN’s New “Magic Wall.” app, which provides a simple look at how the results are going using a map of the US. States will change between red or blue depending on final results, and you can choose to see updated results for presidential races, House races, Senate races, and gubernatorial races.

Numerous other outlets and organizations will offer similar functionality over the web, with scorecards available from places like ABC News, Bloomberg, Reuters and 270toWin.

When will we know who the winner of the 2024 presidential election is?

Don’t expect to know the final results when the first East Coast polls are starting to close at 6 pm ET. In 2020, voting precautions and measures implemented in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the close nature of the race in general, were highlighted as reasons why it lasted until saturday after Election Day for the result of the presidential race to be announced.

Be wary of politicians or partisans who call the race early. While some elections were called on election night, voters are warned not expect a firm result by the end of Election Day, Nov. 5, because of the apparently close nature of the race. The closer the election is in a given state, the longer it takes to count enough ballots to get the final result.

While we likely won’t wait to hear the results for a month, states have until December 11 to certify their election results.
