The FBI warns that fake videos using his name, insignia are spreading misinformation about the election

The Federal Bureau of Investigation said Tuesday it had learned of two cases in which its name and insignia were used to spread misinformation around the 2024 presidential election.

The videos were among a series of fabricated clips impersonating news organizations and officials that circulated online Monday, spreading false information about security threats and election integrity as tens of millions of Americans head to the polls. The videos were likely created by a Russian disinformation group, researchers say.

Two videosset up to appear released by the FBI, made false claims about voter fraud, claiming that the management of five prisons in Pennsylvania, Georgia and Arizona, rigged inmate voting and collaborated with a political party. The videos are not authentic and their content is fake, the FBI said.

Other fabricated videos have been shared in recent days. A fabricated video, made to look like a CBS News report, falsely said the FBI was advising people to “vote remotely” because of a potential terrorist attack. No such warning was issued by US officials, and no such report was produced by CBS News. The account that posted the video on social media platform X was suspended on Monday afternoon.

“This video is not authentic and does not accurately represent the current threat situation or polling place security,” the FBI said in a statement Tuesday.

The group has a history of impersonating international news outlets and US government entities. Many of their posts include QR codes that link to legitimate news outlets to make the posts appear authentic. The group published similar false statements about the threats before the Olympics.
