Seattle Mariners listed as one of the top 10 teams to watch as GM meetings unfold

As the general manager meetings take place in Texas this week, members of the media, executives and fans are paying close attention to the Seattle Mariners.

MLB Insider Bob Nightengale listed them as one of his 10 teams to watch in Monday’s meetings. Here’s what was needed word:

The Mariners would have been the most dangerous team not to make the postseason. They certainly had the best pitching staff and could have been a nightmare for anyone in their path. They have not made the postseason in 22 of the last 23 years. If the streak continues for another season, heads will start to roll. Anything less than a playoff spot will be catastrophic.

The Mariners wasted a great generational pitching staff last season, going 85-77 and finishing 1.0 games out of the playoff race. The M’s had a 10.0 game lead in the American League West in June before blowing it just a few weeks later.

Nightengale is right that there is a real urgency in the fan base and in the clubhouse, but we don’t know what the urgency is within the organization. Team CEO John Stanton has already said the team does not plan to spend on big free agents this offseason and Jerry Dipoto has been brought back as President of Baseball Operations despite the team’s poor finish.

The Ms. they are lucky to have all the top arms in 2025 and should return reliever Matt Brash by the middle of next season. If they can find some more offense next season, they can be the kind of team that scares other teams, but finding that offense has proven to be a challenge in recent years.
