Guns seen at protests near Hindu temple in Brampton, Peel police said

Police in Peel issued a public safety alert Monday night after they said weapons were seen at a demonstration near a Hindu temple in Brampton.

Residents were warned to stay away from the demonstration on The Gore Road near Tyler Avenue. The area is close to the Hindu temple Sabha Mandir, one of the places where violence broke out between groups of protesters Sunday.

In the alert posted on X, formerly Twitter, police said guns were spotted in the crowd. Police said their public order unit had been deployed to the area.

“This is now an illegal assembly and we will clear the area,” police told X.

Police said members of their public order unit advised people at the demonstration to disperse.

“All parties must leave the area now or face arrest,” police added.

A CBC News photographer spotted a protester kicking a car trying to cross the intersection of Gore Road and Don Minaker Drive after the driver honked at the crowd.

The crowd, some of them waving the Indian national flag, had blocked traffic after leaving the temple.

Toronto police confirmed in an email Monday night that they were also at the demonstration to assist Peel police.

The demonstration comes hours after police announced that three men had been charged following violence in Brampton and Mississauga a day earlier.

Police said violence broke out between groups of protesters at a series of demonstrations in the two cities, including one outside the Sabha Mandir Hindu temple where Indian consular officials were visiting and another outside the Malton gurdwara, a Sikh place of worship.

Videos captured outside the Hindu temple on Sunday showed demonstrators holding banners in support of Khalistan, a proposed independent Sikh homeland in northern Indiaclashing with other individuals, including some holding the Indian national flag.

Later on Sunday evening, dozens of protesters appeared outside the Malton gurdwara, where further violence broke out, according to police.

Conflicts between growing diplomatic tensions between Canada and India over allegations of violence against Sikh Canadians. Ottawa has accused India’s home minister of being behind several attacks on Sikh activists on Canadian soil. The Indian government denies the allegations.

Last month, Canada expelled six Indian diplomats over allegations they used their positions to gather intelligence on Canadians in the pro-Khalistan independence movement and then passed on details to criminal gangs that directly targeted the individuals.

India has long accused Canada of harboring pro-Khalistan terrorists whom New Delhi has asked Ottawa to extradite, although Canadian officials say those requests often lack adequate evidence.
