More than half of Jakarta residents have made their choice for governor – Jakarta

Recent survey conducted by Litbang Kompas, the research and development unit of Kompas newspaper, found that 56% of Jakarta residents have firmly decided which gubernatorial candidate they will vote for in the upcoming regional elections.

Meanwhile, 39% are still unsure or willing to change their minds, while 5% remain undecided.

The survey, conducted between October 20 and 25, surveyed 800 respondents selected through stratified random sampling in Jakarta. Data were collected in face-to-face interviews.

The majority of survey participants, at 33.9 percent, reported making their decisions in the past month, while 27 percent said they made their decision in the past week. About 26 percent said they decided several months ago.

The survey found that factors that influenced Jakartans’ voting decisions included candidates’ campaigns, debate performances and values. Other respondents said they seek recommendations from trusted sources.

Litbang Kompas poll results also suggested that the 2024 Jakarta gubernatorial race could go to two rounds. The poll found that the Pramono Anung-Rano Karno pair was leading with 38.3% of voter support, but that the rival Ridwan Kamil-Suswono ticket followed closely behind with 34.6%. The independent Dharma Pongrekun-Kun Wardana Abyoto ticket had 3.3% support.

Jakarta is the only province in the country that has a two-round voting system to elect its governor.

If no gubernatorial candidate receives more than 50% of the vote in the first round, there will be a runoff with only the top two candidates.

The Ridwan-Suswono pair, supported by the Onward Indonesia Coalition (KIM), faces the challenge of consolidating support from coalition members. Among Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) voters, for example, only 36.6% support the ticket.
