Sayreville officers shoot 2 dogs to stop attack on 10-year-old boy

Sayreville police officers shot two dogs to stop an attack on a 10-year-old boy, according to the Middlesex County District Attorney.

Police responded to a 911 call on Nov. 4 around 11:20 a.m. at the Knights Inn about an animal attack. The family member who contacted police said their child had been attacked by the family’s dogs. When the police arrived at the location, they observed the dogs mauling the boy.

“In an effort to stop the attack on the child, the officers shot the dogs and, in the process, an officer was struck and superficially injured by a ricochet,” the prosecutor’s office said in a statement.

The Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office’s Major Crimes Unit also responded to assist with the investigation, which is “active and ongoing,” according to the prosecutor’s office.

Both the 10-year-old boy and the police officer who was hit were taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick. Both are listed in stable condition.

Police are asking anyone with information or surveillance footage from the area to call Detective Stephanie Redline of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office at 732-745-3316.
