Livingston County declares November Adoption Awareness Month, highlighting the need for permanent homes

The Livingston County Board of Supervisors has officially proclaimed November 2024 as Adoption Awareness Month, urging residents to consider adoption as a life-changing option for children in need of stable, loving homes. The county’s statement aims to honor the dedication of foster families and raise public awareness of the impact permanent homes can have on children’s futures.

In New York state, 13,253 children were in foster care at the end of last year, according to the New York State Office of Children and Family Services. Many of these children have endured experiences of neglect or abuse, making the support and stability of a family crucial to their healing and growth. By finding a permanent home, children in foster care can regain a sense of security and build the confidence they need to thrive in school, relationships and other aspects of life.

Adoption Awareness Month encourages Livingston County families to reflect on the potential for adoption in their own lives. As the holidays approach, county officials emphasize that adopting a child not only changes a child’s life, but enriches the families who embrace them, providing opportunities to teach and share life’s simple joys — from reading and cooking to learning sports and teamwork.

The Livingston County Board of Supervisors hopes the month-long observance will inspire local families to consider adoption, joining a network of parents who provide children with love, safety and the foundation to reach their potential.
