Stephen Colbert jokes this election reminds him of how Romans felt ‘when Vesuvius was trying to get re-elected’ | Video

A very worried Stephen Colbert had a vivid metaphor for the general vibes on the final night before Election Day 2024 during his “The Late Show” monologue on Monday.

“We are all, in a very real sense, about to witness history, for better or for worse,” Colbert said. “I guess that’s how the people of Pompeii felt when Vesuvius was trying to get re-elected.”

Continuing the joke, Colbert pretended to be an ancient Roman official, adding, “Okay, if the ash cloud goes like this, we’re celebrating. If the ash cloud is heading our way, everyone takes a cool stance. I’m doing Charlie’s Angels.”

“Of course, because you don’t know what’s going to happen, that’s why you call in the experts at times like this,” Colbert continued. “So what, what do the polls say?”

At that point, a clip played of experts weighing in: “It’s a toss up”; “Looks like a photo finish”; “a dead heat”; “a dead heat”; “a dead heat”; “It’s too close to call”; “much too close to call.”

“You’re far too useless,” Colbert said exasperatedly. “Grow a pair you cowards. I could get a clearer prediction from a magic eight ball.”

Then he pulled out a real magic 8 ball. But when he looked at the answer, he reported that it said “Jill Stein 2024.” Yes.

There’s obviously a lot more to the monologue, and you can watch it all below:
