Officials say a shooting suspect ran from Hardeman County officers and opened fire on a state trooper.

At the request of 25th Judicial District Attorney General Mark Davidson, TBI Special Agents are investigating the circumstances leading to an officer-involved shooting that occurred Monday afternoon in Hardeman County.

Preliminary information indicates that just before 1:20 p.m., Hardeman County Sheriff’s Department dispatch received a call of a shooting on Highway 18 in Hardeman near the Madison County line.

According to the TBI, after the shooting, the suspect fled the scene with a child in the vehicle, leading to a chase and exchange of gunfire between a Tennessee Highway Patrol the soldier and the suspect.

Officials say the shooter fled the scene on Highway 18, where a THP trooper intercepted the suspect’s vehicle around 1:30 p.m.

The suspect refused to stop and shot the officer. The officer then returned fire when the vehicle crashed just south of the 100 freeway. The driver died at the scene.

TBI agents are working to independently determine the series of events that led to the shooting, including collecting evidence and conducting interviews.

The TBI confirmed that the incident began as a domestic violence situation where two women were shot at the initial scene. One of the women was taken to Regional One Hospital in Memphis with serious injuries. The other was taken to a Jackson hospital for treatment.

The investigation is active and ongoing and will determine if the suspect died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound or if he was struck by gunfire from soldiers.

During the process, the findings of the investigations will be shared with the District Attorney General for his review and further examination.
