‘I was so numb’: Jackie ‘O’ Henderson recounts harrowing ordeal with drug and alcohol addiction in A Current Affair interview

Radio star Jackie ‘O’ Henderson has opened up about her battle with drug and alcohol addiction in a memorable interview, saying there were times she knew she might die but was “so numb”.

It came after she broke down live last month while opening up to KIISFM co-host Kyle Sandilands about her battle with addiction.

The 49-year-old described how he turned to painkillers and sedatives as well as alcohol during “three long, painful years”.

In an interview with A Current Affair’s Ally Langdon, Henderson recounted the ordeal which was sparked by her split from husband Lee Henderson after 18 years together and the burden of not seeing enough of her 13-year-old daughter Kitty.

“I did really badly, I didn’t do it in a healthy way, that’s for sure – I just thought the answer was, ‘I’ll have a drink instead and then that drink, you know, became a drink with a pill and it just went from there,” Henderson said.

“…It’s been a horrible existence of not remembering, not wanting to think, feel, do – it’s almost like being in a coma.”

In her recently released memoir, The Whole Truth, Henderson explained that at the height of her addiction she was taking up to 12 Stilnox sleeping pills and 24 Panadeine Forte tablets, often mixed with alcohol.

“I don’t know how I woke up… I really don’t know, someone was taking care of me, they really were,” she told Landon.

“I remember waking up and having to catch my breath – like I’d stopped breathing. How could anyone survive taking that much?”

When asked if she cared if he lived or died, she glumly replied, “not really.”

“I think I was just so numb, and I really blame it on the power of addiction,” she said.

“I had moments where I was like, ‘you can die, look what you’re getting’ and I was seeing all those empty decks and I was like ‘this is matchup.’ But you still do it.”

Henderson was admitted for treatment at the Betty Ford Center in California in late 2022, giving up her popular morning show.

She claimed at the time that it was because she wanted to recover from contracting COVID earlier in the year and initially said she would be outdoors for a few weeks, but didn’t return until months later.

She only told close family members, her personal assistant and best friend that she was seeking help, leaving co-host Kyle Sandilands in the dark, although she said he jokingly asked her if she would rehabilitated after learning he was taking leave.

“He didn’t know or even suspect,” she said.

She said she felt it was “very important” to share her story, even though it was something she never thought she would say publicly.

“I think a lot of people hide things like that, they don’t want to tell anybody,” she said.
