Reno teenager sentenced to prison in fatal crash of Cortez Masto employee

Elmer Rueda-Linares, 18, was sentenced to four to 10 years in prison for his involvement in a fatal crash that occurred in April. The accident resulted in the death of Kurt Englehart, who was senior counsel to Senator Catherine Cortez Masto.

Rueda-Linares admitted he was intoxicated at the time of the incident and expressed remorse before Judge Kathleen Sigurdson handed down the sentence Monday afternoon in a Washoe County courtroom.

Video evidence reviewed during sentencing showed that Rueda-Linares had the green light to turn left, which is why he was not charged with the DUI offense. However, the prosecutor noted that if Rueda-Linares had remained at the scene and acted appropriately, she would have faced a misdemeanor DUI charge.

Judge Sigurdson acknowledged that he understood why Rueda-Linares left the scene of the accident, but stressed that leaving the scene of an accident is not excused.

The crash happened on April 6 at 4:27 am at the intersection of Kietzke Lane and Peckham Lane. The occupants of the second vehicle, including Rueda-Linares, fled on foot but were later apprehended by police. Authorities have confirmed that impairment was a factor in the crash.
