Worcester County Commissioner Responds Amid Board of Education Allegations and Confusion

WORCESTER COUNTY, Md. – For Worcester County residents, Kaleemah Barkley will be on the ballot Tuesday for the Worcester County Board of Education.

Recently, there have been reports that although he is officially listed as a candidate, Barkley is “not actively running for Board of Education District 2.”

She did not respond to WMDT’s request to verify that claim.

If Barkley is elected and chooses not to fill the seat, it would be up to the Worcester County commissioners to vote in a replacement.

Commissioner Caryn Abbott has faced allegations that she advocated for Barkley as a candidate so she could choose the next member of the District 2 Board of Education, a charge she denies.

“It’s obviously false because I haven’t talked to anyone, any voters, for Kaleemah Barkley. And the process doesn’t work that way,” Abbott said.

Commissioner Abbott said District 2 Commissioner Diana Purnell will be the one to nominate a replacement, with all commissioners then voting on the nominee.

The only other candidate besides Barkley in the running is Donald Smack.
