Ohio jury reaches verdict in trial of ex-police officer charged in shooting death of Andre Hill

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — A jury reached a verdict Monday in the trial of a former police officer charged with first degree murder and involuntary manslaughter in the shooting death of Andrew Hilla black man holding a cell phone and keys when he was killed.

The verdict is expected to be announced soon.

Officer Adam Coy, who served nearly 20 years on the Columbus police force, shot Hill four times in a garage nearly four years ago. Coy, who is white, was fired after the shooting. He later told jurors he believed Hill was holding a silver revolver.

Police dashcam footage showed Hill in the garage of a friend’s home holding a cell phone in his left hand, his right hand invisible, seconds before he was fatally shot by Coy. It was nearly 10 minutes before officers on the scene began helping Hill, who was lying bleeding on the garage floor. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.
