Bear carjacker sprays driver, pulls him from vehicle, then hits him: Winnipeg police

For the second time in 10 days, a car thief hit a victim with the stolen vehicle, Winnipeg police said.

In the latest incident, a carjacking bear sprayed a driver, pulled him out of his car, robbed him and then hit him with the stolen vehicle as he fled the scene Sunday morning, Winnipeg police said.

Officers who responded to the scene at the intersection of Sherbrook Street and Ross Avenue at 2:06 a.m. found the 39-year-old victim suffering from minor injuries, police said in a news release Monday.

He was medically cleared at the scene.

Police said the man was waiting for a friend near the intersection when the attacker suddenly opened the driver’s door, sprayed him with bear spray and then pulled him and the dog from the vehicle.

The victim was then robbed of his personal belongings and struck by the vehicle as the assailant left the area in Winnipeg’s Centennial neighborhood, police said.

The stolen vehicle was later found on Edmonton Street between Qu-Appelle and Cumberland avenues.

The victim was unable to provide a description of the thief, but a witness said the carjacker was a male, about five feet eight inches tall, according to the release.

Police are continuing their investigation.

The incident was the second in Winnipeg in 10 days where the victim was hit while the attacker fled.

On October 26, a 45-year-old woman was in a parking lot near the RBC Convention Center in Winnipeg when she was struck by her vehicle as the carjacker was leaving. She was taken to the hospital in unstable condition but was later listed as stable, police said in an earlier statement.
