Lakers’ 2021 Jaxson Hayes case reopened by NBA after new footage released

LOS ANGELES – NBA reopened its investigation into a alleged domestic violence 2021 incident involving Jaxson Hayes after new video from the night of the altercation was released. Hayes played for the New Orleans Pelicans at the time and currently plays for the New Orleans Pelicans Los Angeles Lakers.

on weekends TMZ released surveillance footage from the night of the incident before LAPD officers arrived, timestamped around 1:30 a.m. on July 28, 2021.

The video is just over five minutes long. In the video, his partner at the time is heard saying “I don’t feel safe” and “Don’t touch me”.

As she says “Stop it, let me go,” Hayes is heard saying, “What the hell is wrong with you?”

Then a third party appeared to try to defuse the situation.

The altercation then moved to the alley, where she says, “I’m not going to let you hit me anymore. What the hell do I look like? A punching bag?”

He then asks her to get into his car. Within seconds, Hayes appears to spit on her as she walks away.

“As a result of the media report and the video posted this morning, we are reopening our investigation,” NBA spokesman Mike Bass said. confirmed with ESPN.

The 24-year-old declined to speak to reporters during practice on Sunday. However, Lakers head coach JJ Redick acknowledged the investigation.

“We’re obviously aware that the investigation has been reopened and we’re going to cooperate fully,” Redick said after practice, as reported by ESPN. “But other than that, I’m not going to make another comment about it.”

In July 2021, Los Angeles Police Department launched an internal investigation after Hayes was arrested following a physical altercation with officers inside Woodland Hills.

The internal investigation revealed that the LAPD sergeant violated department policy by kneeling on Hayes’ neck for nearly 15 seconds during the altercation.

Hayes pleaded no contest to one count each of false imprisonment and resisting an officer. According to court documents, ten other misdemeanor charges against Hayes, including causing bodily harm and vandalism, were dismissed as a result of his plea.

In June 2022, Hayes was sentenced to 450 hours of community service, 52 weeks of domestic violence classes and three years of probation.

The Lakers announced the signing of Hayes on July 6, 2023. In an interview with The Athletic, Rob Pelinka, the team’s vice president of basketball operations and general manager, said the Lakers did their due diligence and fully vetted him the big young man.

“I think the most important thing is to take these things very seriously and do a full vetting process,” Pelinka said. “Jaxson was very honest (with) his apology about his handling of it and moved on from it where he played a year or two in the NBA after that. It was something that I felt he owned, he took responsibility for, and he’s going to be a better person on the other side.”
