R38m jewelery shop robbery: Suspects wanted arrested

TWO men, who robbed a jewelry store in Port Elizabeth with goods worth about R38 million, were recently arrested in the Folweni area during a joint criminal intelligence operation.

Charnel Hattingh, head of communications and marketing for Fidelity Services Group, said members of its Specialist Intervention Unit, along with the Port Elizabeth Organized Crime Unit and the eThekwini Infrastructure Task Force, acted on information received regarding the location of two business robbery suspects wanted in Folweni and Umlazi areas.

“One of the suspects was found at his home and arrested because he was involved in the robbery of a jewelry store, where goods worth about 38 million lei were stolen. He was detained at Umlazi police cells and confirmed to be linked to the robbery as the driver of the vehicle that traveled to Port Elizabeth to commit the offence,” she said.

The second suspect was also located at another residence and arrested. He was positively linked to the crime scene from dash cam footage.

Hattingh said: “A search of the suspect’s homes led to the recovery of numerous glasses and sunglasses which had been stolen from an optometrist in a recent robbery in Durban’s central business. Further investigation revealed that the suspect was advertising these glasses and sunglasses on social media.”

She congratulated everyone involved in the successful joint operation for their outstanding teamwork in bringing the suspects to book.
