The mother of a trick-or-treater attacked by a dog is speaking out

Katrina Hammon says her eight-year-old daughter, another child and her adult friend were enjoying Halloween when they saw a house that would soon be a scene that would send them on a trip to the hospital.

“We were getting close to the house, the light was on in the house, like a porch light,” Hammon said.

Katrina Hammon said the sidewalk leading up to the house was dark.

“I didn’t even see the dog it really blew my mind, the dog was all black with a white mouth,” Hammon said.

The attack that stopped Halloween happened Thursday night on Independence Avenue on the city’s northeast side.

Katrina says the dog attacked the children on their way to get candy just feet away from the adults.

“It was like biting me, biting me,” Hammon said.

Katrina acted on pure instinct and adrenaline, immediately subduing the dog with a toy lightsaber as blood poured down her daughter’s arm.

The peak sent the owners rushing out.

“The owners came out, got the dog, raised the garage, put the dog in the garage and put up like a fence so the dog wouldn’t run away,” Hammon said.

Looking ahead, she wanted to know if the dog had been vaccinated, but says the owners didn’t answer her questions, offering only hydrogen peroxide for her daughter’s wounds.

“They’re out there on the sidewalk yelling at the owner, people walking around with kids in strollers and they just don’t care,” Hammon said.

“Because a piece of her arm wasn’t ripped off, she didn’t break it, because she wasn’t beaten, it’s good.”

Katrina says the dog is in quarantine and the owners will pay a fine. Animal Care responded to the scene and collected evidence and is determining the appropriate action for the case.
