Amazon sees massive traffic from non-metro cities during 2024 Festival and Diwali sales, setting new record

Amazon India has announced record results for the Great Indian Festival (AGIF) 2024, marking the event as the most successful in its history. The month-long festival, which ran from September 27 to early November, saw an impressive increase in customer visits, especially from non-metro cities, which accounted for over 85% of total visits.

The Great Indian Festival attracted 140 million customer visits, with tier 2 and smaller cities contributing significantly to this figure. Almost 70% of Prime members who shopped during the festival came from these areas. Amazon had its biggest day of Prime signups in the first two days of the event, with Prime members enjoying fast shipping on more than 3 million items.

Sellers, especially those in non-metro cities, reported record sales. Over 70% of sellers crossed the ₹1 million sales mark compared to last year, with small businesses, artisans and women entrepreneurs selling over 1,000 units every minute. Around 42,000 sellers achieved their highest ever single-day sales, 70% of which are from Tier 2 cities and below.

Amazon Pay saw notable growth during the festival with a 50% increase in ICICI Bank credit card transactions and a 20% increase in UPI transactions. Nearly 25% of electronics purchases were made using EMI options, with most EMIs being offered at no extra cost. This financial flexibility has also boosted travel bookings, with flight and hotel bookings increasing by 20% and 60% respectively.

Product categories such as large-screen TVs, 5G smartphones and audio products saw strong demand. Amazon devices including Fire TV Stick and Redmi Smart Fire TV were the best sellers. Non-gaming and gaming laptops saw 30% year-over-year growth, driven by demand for Intel-powered models. Home improvement items, including lighting and decor, also saw increased sales, with festive items such as lights and garlands being in high demand.

Customers in non-metro cities have been instrumental in driving Amazon’s growth, accounting for more than half of all sales of televisions and large appliances. Amazon Bazaar, focused on essential daily needs, has seen a four-fold increase in users, mainly from tier 2 cities and beyond.

Amazon Business saw a 50% increase in first-time business buyers, with many opting for Prime membership for early access and faster delivery. Demand for bulk discounts has increased, with companies ordering larger quantities and benefiting from a range of tailored discounts.
