Jacksonville mayor on viral fight video from Florida-Georgia game: ‘Disturbing’

Jacksonville Mayor Donna Deegan said in a statement Sunday morning that she was aware of “several disturbing videos” from Florida Gators-Georgia Bulldogs game which appear to repeatedly show Jacksonville sheriff’s officers hitting two alleged fans in the face and in the head.

She also said she spoke with Jacksonville Sheriff TK Waters and an investigation has been launched.

“I am aware of several disturbing videos circulating since last night’s game. I have spoken with Sheriff Waters and the incidents are under investigation. We await the outcome of that investigation,” she said in a statement, which was also posted on her social network. media pages.

Sheriff Waters has yet to publicly comment on the videos or the investigation.

The 15-second video appears to show one officer repeatedly punching someone while covering his face and lying on the aisle steps, while another officer appears to repeatedly punch another person further down the aisle several times.

FOX 35 cannot independently verify the authenticity of the video. It’s also unclear what happened before they led to law enforcement action.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office has not released any information about what happened, what led law enforcement to interact with the fans, or whether anyone was injured.

“The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Professional Standards Division is aware of video circulating from the Georgia-Florida football game. Administrative reviews of the incidents are open,” JSO said in a statement late Saturday.

“As such, the agency will not comment until all the facts are known and reviews are complete.”

A JSO spokesperson sent FOX 35 the exact same statement Sunday morning. A University of Florida spokesman declined to comment and deferred to JSO.
