Here’s what Patriots QB Drake Maye had to say about the OT loss to the Titans

Drake Maye cleared the NFL’s concussion protocol in time to suit up on Sunday and had an eventful afternoon in a 20-17 overtime loss to the Titans.

Maye was able to pull the Patriots to overtime with some incredible heroics late in regulation, but threw his second interception of the game in overtime as New England fell 2-7.

“Proud of the guys for fighting, I think that’s the biggest thing,” Maye said after the game. “Disappointed by the defeat, I made some bad decisions, especially at the end. We had a chance to go down there and at least tie them, we’re the only 40, I think it was the first down. . . it just has to be better. There were some decisions we made throughout the game that would have affected the outcome, I took it upon myself, those guys struggled, especially those up front, the receivers struggled. It was just short. I’ve got to go back and learn from it, especially me, I’ve got to take advantage of these reps I’m getting in the game and I’ve got to play better.”

Maye turned it over three times, fumbling for a fourth-quarter sack and throwing a pair of fumbles. The second came when he tried to unlock a long throw in overtime, only to find the hands of Titans safety Amani Hooker, who secured his second pick of the day.

“First of all, and I see the fuse, I think I’m blowing it and I need to put something on it,” Maye said. “Just a stupid decision. Something you’d like to get back, especially in this situation. . . sometimes the best play is to throw it away, and that’s a bad decision on my part.”

But New England was only in overtime because of a spectacular play by Maye on the final play of regulation, when the rookie QB extended the game by more than 10 seconds, avoided multiple sacks and somehow found Rhamondre Stevenson in end zone for a game. -tying the TD as Maye was carried to the turf.

“I’m doing my best,” Maye said of the play. “I think they split up and double the guys inside. We had a bunch concept, we had a back-line (receiver) and I think Hunter (Henry) ended up going out of bounds, and I was just trying to keep the play alive, make a play. (Stevenson), good for a running back to play like a receiver and make a play, but he ended up short, so the play really doesn’t matter at this point.

“Credit to the front guys, the front five jamming their asses for 12 seconds. That’s impressive. . . I just have to find a way to the end there.”

Maye missed much of last Sunday’s win over the Jets after leaving the game with a concussion suffered from a hit while entering high school in New York. The injury didn’t deter Maye from using his legs on Sunday; rushed for 95 yards against the Titans, third most in a game by a QB in Patriots history and most since 1976.

“Yeah, I tried to slide a little bit headfirst, sometimes I think it’s just as dangerous to dive into people’s legs,” Maye said. “But I won’t change the player I am; Once I’ve gone through the protocol and deleted, I’ll be the player. If they leave the boys and there are emergency lanes ahead, I will make them pay. That’s my thinking. I’ve got to make some better throws and maybe I missed some guys, but at the same time I’m going to play the way I’m going to play.”
