The man killed in the Eau Claire shooting was a firefighter

EAU CLAIRE, Mich. (WNDU) – The Berrien County Sheriff’s Office has identified the victim and suspect in a fatal shooting early Saturday morning in Eau Claire.

Deputies were called just before 12:45 a.m. to the intersection of Main Street and Elm Street.

When they arrived, they say they found two male victims. One of them was unresponsive and suffering from life-threatening injuries, and the other had non-life-threatening injuries.

Both victims were taken to hospital, where one of them later died. The victim has since been identified as Chad Medlin, 36, of Benton Harbor.

The Berrien County Sheriff’s Office tells us Medlin was an Eau Claire firefighter. The Eau Claire Fire Department also confirmed this in a Facebook post.

“Today marks a sad day for our department. I lost a friend. A fellow firefighter. Someone who served his country,” said Eau Claire Fire Department Chief Norm Carl. “We’ll do the job because that’s who we are and who you want us to be. But each step will be just a little harder. Watch out for us bro Chad Medlin, we’ll take it from here.”

Police say they were able to quickly identify Rigoberto Gomez, 47, of Eau Claire, as the suspect with the help of witnesses. Gomez was arrested and is being held at the Berrien County Jail on multiple charges.
