Ted Kravitz questions key Mercedes decision after ‘not true’ at Sao Paulo Grand Prix

Mercedes’ finish at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix could be under threat pending the outcome of an investigation by the FIA stewards.

George Russell finished fourth while Lewis Hamilton remained 10th following a late challenge from Sergio Perez in the final laps, but that could change after the team was investigated mid-race.

The steward’s question is about tire pressure on the grid, with Mercedes adjusting both cars while on the grid.

Although there is no specific technical regulation regarding the infringement, there is a technical directive “TD0003, points 2.c) and 2.h)”, according to the intenders, which it contravenes.

This states that the adjustment must be done with the wheels on the car, however Mercedes did it on both cars with these fitted to their car in the pre-start rush.

Discuss the investigation while commenting Sky SportsTed Kravitz questioned how Mercedes planned to explain the situation to the commissioners.

Ted Kravitz questions Mercedes’ explanation for the technical violation

Technical violations usually lead to teams being disqualified, as Mercedes found out earlier this year when Russell was kicked out for excessive floorboard wear after his victory in the Belgian GP.

Kravitz expects it will be difficult for them to argue their way out of any potential penalty given the nature of the violation.

“I’m still thinking about Mercedes adjusting the tire pressures on the grid,” Kravitz said.

“The FIA Technical Delegate has said he is against a technical directive for this year, but it’s a real no, no, I don’t know how they’re going to explain their way out of this.”

George Russell fights back after mis-strateging

Russell took the lead from Lando Norris into the first corner of the opening lap and held it as the rain hit the circuit, but as it began to intensify the team decided to pit him for a new set of intermediate tires.

Russell exited behind Max Verstappen and the two Alpine drivers in the pits, with Norris following after complaining about the rain. After a brief Safety Car for the conditions, a red flag was subsequently thrown due to a crash by Franco Colapinto.

This allowed all the cars ahead of Russell to have a free tire change during the stop, effectively sealing his position for the rest of the race.

Hamilton hit back after a disappointing qualifying and was dealing with a car he said was not driven and “jumped a lot” in the straights. The seven-time world champion finished 10th after holding off Perez in the closing stages of the race to seal the final spot.
