The Lakers center is being investigated by the NBA for internal unrest

The NBA reopens a 2021 domestic disturbance incident now involving Los Angeles Lakers center Jaxson Hayes. TMZ released a video of the incident that prompted the league’s new investigation.

ESPN NBA Insider Dave McMenamin reported the news on social media. The NBA issued a comment on the decision to reopen the investigation.

“As a result of the media report and the video posted this morning, we are reopening our investigation,” NBA spokesman Mike Bass told ESPN in a statement.

The video that TMZ posted is about five and a half minutes long and shows camera footage of Hayes arguing with his then-girlfriend Sofia Jamora. Hayes appears to pull Jamora out a door, and video captured an audio portion of the entire incident.

“Stop. Leave me.” Hayes can be heard replying, “What the hell is wrong with you?”

The brawl continues in the alley, with Jamora getting back up in front of Hayes.

“I’m not going to let you hit me anymore,” Jamora can be heard saying in the video. “What the hell do I look like, a punching bag?”

Hayes then walks away from Jamora before turning around and spitting in her direction. Ring camera footage is timestamped on July 28, 2021.

A spokesman for Hayes released a statement regarding the new investigation a NBA.

“There has already been an extensive investigation in which we have cooperated with the league, and as that investigation reopens, we will continue to do so.” a Hayes spokesman told ESPN on Saturday.

After the domestic disturbance call, Hayes was arrested. He ended up being sentenced to three years of probation with 450 hours of community service. In addition, he was required to attend weekly domestic violence classes for a year, but was not disciplined by NBA for arrest.

Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka also commented on the serious matter.

“I think the most important thing is to take these things very seriously and do a full vetting process,” Rob Pelinka, Lakers vice president of basketball operations and general managertold reporters when asked about the Hayes signing. “Jaxson has been very honest (with) his apologies about his handling of it and he’s moved beyond it where he had a year or two in NBA playing after him. It was something that I felt he owned, he took responsibility for it, and he’s going to be a better person on the other side.”

It remains to be seen what will happen with this new investigation, but it appears that all parties are cooperating to the fullest extent.
