Detroit man charged with unsafe gun storage after 3-year-old son shot

A Detroit man has been charged after his 3-year-old son allegedly shot himself with an unsafe gun.

The Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement Sunday that Richard Williams, 29, was charged with unsafe storage of a weapon causing injury, a felony that carries a maximum sentence of 15 years.

“Another day. Another child injured with a loaded, unsecured gun,” District Attorney Kym Worthy said in the release. “Tomorrow (will be) another if we do not pay universal attention and take this issue seriously. These are our children – and if we can’t unite for them, who will we unite for?”

The child was in his father’s care around 12:44 a.m. Wednesday at a home in the 4000 block of Grand Street when the child found his father’s gun and fired it, hitting himself in the stomach, authorities said.

The child was taken to a hospital for treatment, authorities said.

Williams was arraigned on Friday the 36thth District Court. His bond is $50,000 cash or surety, with a bond hearing set for Monday. His probable cause hearing is Friday before Judge Ronald Giles, and his preliminary examination is scheduled for Nov. 14.

Wednesday’s incident came weeks after a 5-year-old girl was shot on the west side of the city.

A 3-year-old son shot himself earlier with an unsafe gun in his Detroit home. His mother was charged with violating the state’s safe storage of firearms law, a five-year felony.

In August, a 7-year-old boy was hospitalized after being hit in the head by a bullet fired at his home in the area of Fairmount Drive and Shakespeare Street on the city’s east side.
