The Monkey Junction Walmart has closed as the investigation into Saturday’s fatal shooting continues

The Walmart in Monkey Junction remained closed Sunday morning after an employee was shot and killed during an attempted robbery Saturday night.

A security guard was at the store Sunday morning, informing customers that the southern New Hanover County store was closed and told the StarNews the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office was also making rounds.

According to the sheriff’s office, around 6 p.m. Saturday, several Walmart employees attempted to stop a man from shoplifting at the store located at 5135 Carolina Beach Road.

A struggle ensued and “the suspect brandished a firearm and fired one shot striking a Walmart employee,” according to a release.

The victim died on the spot.

The suspect fled but was confronted by a sheriff’s deputy in the parking lot and taken into custody, according to the sheriff’s office.

A Walmart employee told the StarNews the store could reopen on Monday.

The victim’s name had not been released as of Sunday morning. The sheriff’s office also has not yet released the suspect’s name or the charges he faces.
