The government recently issued a warning about the growing prevalence of cyber fraud, particularly in the context of traffic dispute scams. According to the Ministry of Information Technology, these fraudulent schemes have resulted in substantial financial losses to numerous individuals, amounting to crores of rupees. The scammers’ modus operandi usually involves sending a fabricated link to individuals with the aim of facilitating the payment of e-challans, thus luring the victims into the scam.

The government has alerted the public that individuals are receiving misleading messages, emails or notifications from counterfeit apps claiming traffic violations. These communications often instruct recipients to send payment for alleged outstanding e-challans. The messages contain fraudulent links that redirect users to websites designed to mimic official government portals. Additionally, there have been cases where cybercriminals distribute fraudulent apps through links embedded in these messages or emails, further ensnaring unsuspecting individuals.

How does this new scam work?

The tactics used by these malicious actors involve instilling fear in potential victims by issuing threats via fraudulent messages. Such messages may claim that vehicles will be impounded if the alleged dispute is not resolved promptly, causing victims to act without sufficient control.

To specifically exploit individuals, hackers use phishing techniques, sending fake links via text or email that, when accessed, lead to websites that closely resemble legitimate government platforms. This replication of official websites is designed to deceive individuals, who may unwittingly provide sensitive information, thereby making themselves vulnerable to financial exploitation.

How to mitigate this?

To reduce the risk of falling prey to these scams, individuals should follow several precautions. It is essential that you refrain from clicking on any links provided in unsolicited messages or emails. Verifying the identity of the sender is essential before sharing any personal or financial information. Individuals should ignore any communication that does not have verification of the authenticity of the sender. In cases where a link has been accessed inadvertently, it is imperative that you verify the website’s legitimacy before taking any further action.

Official communications regarding e-challans or government notifications are disseminated from recognized and verified email addresses. Therefore, individuals are advised to confirm the credibility of the sender’s email and phone number before engaging with the content. Furthermore, personal information, including bank details, should never be disclosed to unknown entities, encouraging a safer digital environment.
