Viral video shows JSO officers hitting spectators at Georgia-Florida game

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A video posted on X during the Georgia-Florida game attracted a lot of attention online after it showed three JSO officers punching two spectators at Everbank Stadium on Saturday night.

It’s unclear from the video what prompted the altercation, but two uniformed officers can be seen punching two separate attendees at the Florida-Georgia game.

At the start of the video, an officer appears to have one of the fans pinned down as a witness shouts: “Why are you hitting him?”

Later in the video, the same officer can be seen hitting that fan in the back of the head multiple times.

A few steps away, two other police officers can be seen holding back a different fan before one of the officers starts hitting them as well.

The video ends with the officer who hit the fan in the back of the head standing next to them as their heads are facing the ground.

John Phillips, a civil rights attorney, told News4JAX that the video is “appalling,” but he added that “we don’t have the full context” of the situation and don’t know what led up to the incident.

News4JAX also spoke with safety analyst Tom Hackney, who said, “The suspect had his hands wrapped around (the police officer’s) waist, and there is a gun in 100 percent of the encounters that law enforcement has.. .one of the things that are really hammered. in training is firearms protection.”

He continued: “When someone has their hand around your waist, (and) is close to where the firearm is and (with) a large crowd like this, things can go from bad to worse.”

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office responded to News4JAX’s request for comment on the video with the following statement:

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Professional Standards Division is aware of video circulating from the Georgia-Florida football game. Administrative analyzes of the incidents are opened. As such, the agency will not comment until all the facts are known and reviews are complete.
