The first annual Pumpkin Bash hopes to raise awareness about composting

MORRISONVILLE, NY. (WCAX) – Flying pumpkins at the Clinton County landfill as part of a waste management company’s Compost Bash.

Casella Waste Systems hosted its first annual Pumpkin Bash, destroying over one hundred and fifty pumpkins.

In addition to providing eco-friendly fun, the company has raised awareness for composting as it grows its organic waste programs in New York by partnering with local businesses and organizations.

Unlike Vermont, New York does not have a law requiring residents to compost.

“Composting needs to be a community event and that’s why we’re trying to raise awareness. The whole community must come together. A lot of people do it in their backyards in a rural county like Clinton County, and that’s a perfectly acceptable way to do it,” said Sean Lukas with the Clinton County Waste Ramp.

It was to bring your own pumpkins or make a cash or dry food donation for the Joint Economic Opportunity Board, which provides support programs for low-income residents.

After the pumpkins were hammered, thrown from a sling, or shot from a trebuchet, they were composted.
