Gina London: Communication breakdown – any last words for Kamala Harris and Donald Trump?

Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump clearly represent vastly different approaches, both in what they say and how they deliver it.

With as much neutrality as I can, I want to present to you their divergent approaches to how they influence, motivate and lead.

Speech style

Kamala Harris is known for an empathetic and conversational speaking style that emphasizes connecting with her audience.

Throughout her vice presidency and her time as a senator, she often used inclusive language, addressing people with phrases like “Let’s work together” and “We’re in this as a team.”

At a recent town hall, she said, “The measure of a person’s leadership is how they bring people along with them, not just how they stand in front of the room.”

Her tone is reflective, often pausing as she weighs her words before responding. This approach aligns with her training as a prosecutor, where measured language was a key tool.

Donald Trump uses a more assertive, even combative, style in his speeches and public statements.

Known for his “make America great again” rallying cry, he uses direct, forceful and unpredictable language.

His direct, hyperbolic language seeks to evoke immediate emotional responses from his audience.

He admits he often deviates from answering questions concisely, saying he prefers to “weave” instead.

Handling questions

Harris tends to approach questions with deliberation and often uses them as opportunities to address complex topics.

Her answers are known for their layered structure, starting with broad ideas before moving into specifics.

Asked about immigration reform, she said, “We need to look at the causes and not just the symptoms.” She then explained her views on comprehensive immigration policy.

This approach has been effective in attracting audiences who appreciate a reflective, analytical style, although it may seem overly cautious to those looking for direct, unfiltered answers.

Donald Trump, on the other hand, is famously straight with reporters and rarely hesitates to express his views directly.

During his presidency, his exchanges with the press were often unscripted, allowing him to grab headlines with memorable—if sometimes divisive—phrases.

Team management

Kamala Harris’ approach to managing her team seems rooted in collaboration.

In her role as vice president, she apparently checks in frequently and encourages open dialogue. Former employees said Harris listened deeply and weighed perspectives, fostering an environment where multiple viewpoints were welcome.

Her focus on inclusion aligns with her public image as a leader who considers diverse perspectives before making decisions. This coalition has been effective in creating alliances, although it can sometimes slow down decision-making.

Donald Trump, on the other hand, is known for demanding loyalty in his inner circle, rewarding those who demonstrate it and chastising those who don’t.

His former personal lawyer Michael Cohen once said: “He expects you to be a soldier for him. And if you don’t, you’re out.”

During Trump’s tenure in the White House, there has been an unusually high turnover of officials.

Communicating vision and values

When it comes to communicating his vision, Harris pushes for hope and resistance, often connecting his political goals with a larger picture of social justice and equity.

Her vision revolves around inclusiveness and progressive progress, appealing to voters looking for a leader focused on long-term reform and structural change.

Trump’s vision, on the other hand, is often rooted in national power, economic growth, and direct response to perceived threats.

His messages on topics such as immigration and job creation often include powerful and memorable phrases.

Public figure and management

Kamala Harris’s public persona reflects her background in law and politics. Her thoughtful and deliberate style is consistent with someone who prioritizes methodical, well-thought-out decisions. Her leadership style is often described as inclusive and collaborative.

Donald Trump’s persona is built around his tough boss image, made famous by his days as a star apprentice. He built a following based on his impatience and unpredictability.

Known for a “tell it like it is” approach, Trump’s style is unapologetic, which resonates with those who value decisiveness and immediate, bold action. His style has the potential to mobilize quickly, though it can also alienate those seeking more thoughtful and measured leadership.

The question before the US

As Americans head to the polls, both candidates’ styles present different approaches to leadership.

Harris offers a more collaborative, deliberative style that emphasizes listening and coalition building. Trump brings a command-oriented style that demands loyalty, that prioritizes quick action and clear, forceful communication.

Both candidates have shown that their leadership styles resonate deeply with their supporters. If you could vote and had no political affiliation, what style would you choose?

Who would you like to lead a team project you’ve been assigned to? Who would you like to run your department? Who would you like to lead your organization? Who would you like to run the world’s largest economy?
