New York’s top high school football team cancels season amid sexual misconduct allegations

WARRENSBURG, NY — New York’s top-ranked small-school football poll abruptly ended its undefeated season Saturday after officials in the three upstate districts said allegations of sex abuse on a bus were brought schoolboy against some team players.

Warrensburg-Lake George-Bolton (8-0) was the top seed for the Section II, Class D football tournament and ranked No. 1 by the New York State Sports Writers Association.

Superintendents of the three school districts — which are merging to form one football team — said Warren County sheriff’s deputies opened an investigation Thursday, a day after the allegations were reported. The schools did not release details.

In a joint statement, the superintendents — Amy Langworthy of Warrensburg, John Luthringer of Lake George and Chad Shippee of Bolton — called the behavior “egregious” and added that it “is a clear violation of district rules and the athletic code of conduct.”

“We have determined it is necessary to cancel the remainder of the 2024 football season with immediate effect to allow law enforcement to continue their criminal investigation,” inspectors said. “This is not a decision we have taken lightly and we recognize that the timing of this decision is disappointing. However, given the seriousness of the alleged circumstances and the ongoing investigation, this course of action was necessary.”

The schools declined further comment, citing the ongoing law enforcement investigation. Members of the coaching staff, contacted by The Post-Star newspaper in nearby Glens Falls, said they had been instructed not to comment.

The team has outscored opponents 329-34 this season, excluding one shutout win. Another play was called after one quarter; the team was leading 40–0 at that point and the opponent decided not to play the rest of the game.

All schools are located about an hour north of Albany. Class D is the lowest of the five enrollment classes that New York uses in its Football Championship Game format. The Warrensburg, Lake George and Bolton school districts, even when combined, still compete at the small school level.
