Lincolnites celebrate Day of the Dead

LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – While Halloween was Thursday, skeleton decorations are still outside some homes in Lincoln.

That’s because they were for another holiday: Day of the Dead.

Día De Los Muertos spans several days and inspires colorful decorations. Decorations that seek to transform pain into a celebration of life.

In Lincoln, the Nebraska Museum of History has held some form of celebration for the holiday each year. took place right inside the building, on Saturday, between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., in partnership with Lux Art Center.

Both long-time attendees and first-timers were able to take part in art projects: a staple of the holiday festivities. Remembering relatives in their own unique way.

“Lots of colors and flowers and it’s all about the celebration,” Emma Reiner said. “They’re just ways to bring that in and honor those family members.”

“Our family is going to the other side,” said Rosalia Roger. “Where are they going? This is our way of honoring what they left us and who we are.”

The event was free to the public, as it is every year. People who attend each year said it was a great way to not only feel close to their past relatives, but also to connect their culture with the community in which they live.

A large feast is usually held to celebrate the day. While that wasn’t the case this year, they said the event could return as early as next year.
