Suspect in downtown Orlando shooting skips court appearance

Orlando, FloridaThe 17-year-old suspected of firing a gun during Halloween celebrations in downtown Orlando, killing 2 and wounding 8, did not attend his court appearance Saturday morning. Instead, his mother sat next to the public defender in the courtroom, barely able to say her own name. “Could you speak into the microphone?” the judge asked, “Just take a moment, pull yourself together.”

Jaylen Dwayne Edgar faces two counts of first-degree murder and six counts of attempted first-degree murder, officials said.

Edgar’s mother didn’t say much and cried as she stood before the judge. The judge ruled that Edgar will remain behind bars until his next hearing. “He will be held in custody until his court hearing,” she said.

Attorney Albert Yonfa, who was unrelated to the case, said he expected prosecutors to charge Edgar as an adult. “The state attorney has the right to directly charge this person as an adult, even if he is 17, because of the heinousness of the crime he is accused of.”

Orlando police say it all started at 1:07 a.m. Friday with gunfire in downtown Orlando that sent crowds running for cover. Three minutes later, there was a second report of gunfire a block away. The second shooting happened right in front of ten police officers, who quickly took down Jaylen Edgar.

Chief Eric Smith spoke about the shooting at a news conference. “We all know that shooting people doesn’t solve anything. This person here threw his life away for what? For some beef or whatever will come out in the investigation. We all know it’s not going to be the most serious thing in the world.” Smith said.

Police said there were ten victims in total and two people died, including a UCF student. “So it’s one of those things where we need everybody’s help, but we’re going to continue to do what we’re doing, we’re going to continue to have strong security downtown and we’re going to have a big presence and we’re going to be ready for whatever comes.” he said. Chief Smith.

The two victims were identified Saturday as Tyrek Hill, 25, and Timothy Schmidt Jr., 19.

Orlando police are asking anyone in the crowd who may have gotten cellphone photos or video of the shooting to contact them so they can get it as evidence and be part of the investigation the police.

After the shooting, Mayor Buddy Dyer instituted a temporary 1 a.m. curfew and ended alcohol sales at midnight. Former Orlando Police Chief Orlando Rolon said it’s a step in the right direction. “Somewhere during this conversation, there has to be a pitch for some adjustments to how business is done in the downtown area.”
