West Bengal: 2 Trinamool MLAs attacked by party workers in North 24 Parganas

Two separate incidents of violence involving Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLAs from North 24 Parganas were reported on Saturday. The attacks took place in the Legislative Assembly areas of Minakhan and Sandeshkhali.

On Thursday, TMC MLA Usharani Mondal and her husband Mrityunjay Mondal were beaten up by a group of party workers while returning from a Kali Puja programme.

In a complaint filed at the Haroa police station, Mondal alleged that around 30 people, allegedly led by a local TMC leader, Khalek Molla, intercepted their convoy.

Molla, however, denied the allegations.

In a separate incident, Sandeshkhali MLA Sukumar Mahata was attacked by a group of people in Simultala village while returning from Nazat the same night.

Mahata claimed that he was assaulted by party workers affiliated with local strongman Sheikh Shahjahan and also mentioned that supporters of another TMC leader, Abdul Kader Molla, were involved in the attack.

He attributed the violence to tensions over Shahjahan’s recent replacement by Mizanur Rahman as Sandeshkhali block president.

In response to these incidents, the police have registered two separate cases.
