After years of waiting, Rockstar says it will finally bring the PC version of Grand Theft Auto Online up to par with the “enhanced” edition that’s been available for consoles for the past two years.

GTA Online came to Xbox Series XS and PlayStation 5 in March 2022 with a variety of “technical and graphical enhancements.” That version of the game has received several exclusive upgrades since then, including ray tracing and GTA+ subscription servicewhich offers players a range of cash and monthly content discounts — all unavailable on PC. As I said last year, I thought PC gamers were left in the dust because… well, I was.

The first real sign that PC gamers might finally be brought up to speed came in September, when Rockstar integrated BattlEye anticheat in GTA Online. Adding BattlEye to the game after nearly a decade of operation seemed a bit odd, but rockstar games adept Thesis 2 speculated at the time that it “could be seen as preparations for the Gen9 version (of Grand Theft Auto 5) to arrive on PC”.

Turns out he was right. IN A update posted today, apparently about new content coming to GTA Online in December — a Darnell Bros Garment Factory takeover, new Dispatch Work missions, updates to the Job Creator, community challenges, that sort of thing — Rockstar said it’s “planning to bring much -requested PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S features of GTA Online to the PC platform in the new year.”

That’s the extent, aside from the usual exhortation to “stay tuned,” so the details of what PC players can expect aren’t yet settled, and that’s caused some consternation on Reddit. Some players are concerned that the graphical improvements will have a negative impact on performance on older computers (remember, GTA Online is more than 10 years old, so it no doubt runs on some old platforms), while others expect that Rockstar can avoid this problem by only adding enhanced exclusive content and excluding visual updates like ray tracing, which is less of a problem considering the number of changes that already make GTA Online look awfully nicer than the stock release.

There’s also the question of whether the enhanced edition on PC will have a price or be a free upgrade. We’ve reached out to Rockstar to see if we can get more information out of them on this, though given how secretive the studio usually is about these things, I’m not too hopeful.

All this happens in the shadows Grand Theft Auto 6which is scheduled to launch on consoles sometime in 2025 (although we have doubts about it) and has yet to be confirmed for PC. It will come to PC eventually, we’re pretty confident about that, but time interval is the big question: it took seven months for Grand Theft Auto 4 to make the transition from consoles to PC, and a year and a half for GTA 5 to make the move. Red Dead Redemption? 14 and a half years. Hopefully GTA 6 will be a bit faster than that.
