SUMTER COUNTY, Fla. – A 15-month-old child was found dead in the parking lot of South Sumter Middle School Friday afternoon, according to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.

In a statementdeputies said they were called to the school around 4:18 p.m. after receiving a report of the deceased child.

An investigation revealed the child was unintentionally left in a car parked at the school, the release said.

“The child was present with a family member and was going to be dropped off at daycare,” the statement said. “However, the family member forgot the child was present and went to school.”

An investigation is ongoing involving the Medical Examiner’s Office and the State Attorney’s Office, although no details have been released regarding any charges in this incident.

“This is a tragic situation and our hearts go out to the child’s family,” the sheriff’s office said.
